Deduct the Expenses of Moving Away for a New Job

You are ready to start a new phase in your life — a new job in a new place far from your current home. And the good news is that you may be able to deduct the cost of moving your family and your possessions to your new home.

To qualify for a tax deduction for your moving expenses, you must meet certain conditions. Generally, the rules require that the distance between your new job location and your former home must be at least 50 miles greater than your old commute. In addition, you must be employed in the location of your new job for at least 39 weeks during the 12 months following your move. If you are self-employed, you must work full-time in the new location for at least 78 weeks during the 24 months following your move, with 39 weeks falling in the first year.

Potentially deductible costs include those for packing and transporting household goods and personal effects, storing and insuring belongings, and travel and lodging.
